Donald Glover Cast as Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Donald Glover is now officially Yoshi. The Emmy-winning actor will voice the big-eyed dinosaur in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to Nintendo’s 2023 smash hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie. So far, there are no plans for him to make Yoshi rap like Childish Gambino. Watch the film’s trailer below.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie boasts returning cast members from the original movie—Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and so on—as well as several new voices for old favorites, like Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Rounding out the cast for the video game adaptation are Luis Guzman as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen.

Billed as a sequel to the events of the first film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows Mario and friends as they face off against the evil Koopa King and his son, travel to new planets in space, and eventually cross paths with the fan-favorite Birdo (who is not yet credited with a voice actor). The animated movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, produced by Nintendo and Illumination, and distributed by Universal. It hits theaters on April 1.

Although Glover is best known for TV shows like Atlanta and Community, he’s also played his fair share of feature film roles, including Solo: A Star Wars Story and his own feature Guava Island opposite Rihanna. He’s still as comfortable as ever behind the camera, though, directing the eerie stan satire that was 2023’s Swarm.

Bando Stone and the New World, Glover’s final album as Childish Gambino, came out in July 2024. That same year, he canceled his world tour. He later revealed that he had suffered a stroke without realizing it, and gotten surgery for a broken foot and a hole in his heart.
