Guided By Voices: Our 1994 Interview, ‘The Basement Tapes’

Guided By Voices‘ 46th studio album, La La Land, is slated to be released on Jan. 20, 2023. But to hold us over for now, the record’s first track, “Instinct Dwelling,” was premiered today.

The thundering “Instinct Dwelling” was written by frontman Robert Pollard and Needmore Songs (BMI). The guitar-driven ride begins with an eerie distortion followed by Pollard’s reference to the album title in the second line: “Better not see your contraband / You’ll wind up in la la land.”

La La Land is somewhat of a companion piece to Tremblers and Goggles by Rank and continues to explore a path of diversity in styles and in longer, more adventurous song structures,” Pollard said of the upcoming record in a statement, referring to the band’s July release.

The band had also released Crystal Nuns Cathedral back in March, while Scalping the Guru is still set to be released later this month.

Like fellow rockers King Gizzard, GBV is known for releasing multiple albums each year, so hopefully, La La Land will be the first of a few GBV albums to be released next year.

GBV are scheduled to perform two shows this month in Dallas and Austin. After venturing to the north east in November and December, the band has a four-night stint in Evanston, IL leading up to New Year’s Eve.
