Saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman makes his first-ever appearance on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series performing music from his acclaimed Blue Note debut where are we featuring vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
You can watch Redman and his band perform “Chicago Blues,” a mash-up of Count Basie and Sufjan Stevens, Bruce Springsteen’s poignant “Streets of Philadelphia,” and Redman’s powerful original “After Minneapolis” in footage from the concert available on the official NPR Tiny Desk website.
where are we is one of Redman’s most compelling albums to date, a spellbinding musical journey across the United States of America that marks his first-ever vocal project. “The surface concept is rather simple,” said Redman. “Each of the songs on the album is about, or at least makes reference to, a specific geographical location (city or state or region) in the United States. So, on one level, this is an album ‘about’ America — at once a celebration and a critique. But it is also, to varying degrees, a ballads album, a standards album, an album of romantic longing, an album of social reflection, an album of melodic invention, an album of improvisational adventure, an album of mashups, perhaps even a tribute album of sorts.”
Joshua Redman will continue to tour the project across North America, Asia, and Europe throughout 2024 with Cavassa and his young band featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo.
