A new documentary on Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival this year.
Directed by Mike Downie, The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal has been added to TIFF’s Primetime slate. It chronicles the nearly 40-year career of the group, beginning with Rob Baker, Gord Downie, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair’s first collaborations in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. An official date for an eventual Prime Video launch is still to come.

“We’re thrilled to premiere the incredible story of The Tragically Hip at this year’s TIFF. It will be a powerful and memorable event,” said Downie. “This project is a labour of love, with personal and unseen footage from the band’s 40-year history. We set out to understand what held the band together, what pushed them apart and how they captured the hearts and minds of so many fans both in Canada and around the world.”
Across their career, The Tragically Hip released 14 studio albums, nine of which reached No. 1 in Canada. They won 17 Juno Awards, and recently earned the Humanitarian Award. Their final performance as a five-piece, the last show on the Man Machine Poem Tour the group embarked on after Gord Downie’s terminal cancer diagnosis, took place in August 2016 at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston.
In 2022, The Tragically Hip were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, roughly twenty years after receiving a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. Outside of their musical legacy, their history of humanitarian work has raised millions for organizations like Camp Trillium, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Sunnybrook Foundation, WAR Child, the Special Olympics, and the Unison Benevolent Fund.
More recently, the group announced a commemorative box set of their classic debut Up To Here. Originally released on September 5, 1989, the record features breakthrough Canadian rock radio No.1 singles like “Blow At High Dough” and “New Orleans Is Sinking.” Up To Here earned the band a JUNO Award for “Most Promising Artist” in 1990. The box set is out November 8.
